PERRYSBURG (WTVG) – River Hollow is a Perrysburg horse farm along River Road near Buttonwood Park. It flooded earlier this month when ice and water spilled over the banks of the Maumee River. To add insult to injury, the owners are now facing more clean up work.

It will be weeks and maybe even months before the owners of the farm are able to start cleaning up the outside damage. To make maters worse, just over a week after the ice and water hit, a hay barn caught on fire.

There’s a lot of heavy lifting at the farm right now. Clean up inside the barn is in its second week. Larry Hutson and his wife Nancy own the farm, “There are plenty of things we can still laugh about with all this, but Mother Nature is not someone you fool with.”

Erika Heintshcel-Githens is the head trainer at the farm. Dozens of horses had to be evacuated because of the high water and many of them are now back home. The focus has been cleaning up the ice and water damage in the barn and arena so that all of the horses can move back in the coming weeks.

But while she was cleaning up last Friday, Erika noticedanother big problem. Hay bales were smoldering in a storage barn, “I got a little weak in the knees and thought dear God what do I do?”

The first thing Erika thought of was the horses. They were all safe because the hay barn is several barns away from the main barn. There was also plenty of water an ice in between the buildings.
Erika quickly got help, but she says all of the hay bales in the barn were lost, “We lost roughly one thousand bales and that would have lasted us through June. The good thing is that we are going to be able to buy replacement hay from our supplier.”

Larry says he was surprised by the fire, “You often hear about hay fires in the summer, but I never would have guessed that in 20 degree weather this would happen. The water gets in and the hay bales start fermenting and heating up. You couldn’t even touch some of the bales they were so hot. There were no flames just hot material that was smoldering. It took dozens of dump truck loads to haul away all the ruined hay.”

As for the rough hand the Hutson family has been dealt in recent weeks, Larry says they’ll rebuild the place they’ve owned and loved for a quarter century, “River Hollow means a lot to us. It is a beautiful place. You can’t just throw in the towel and say this is it. That would sure be easy to do. It would be easy to walk away and head south, but we’re not going to do that. We love this place.” And for that, a lot of people are grateful.

This is the second time River Hollow has flooded since the Hutsons have owned it. Larry says the recent flooding is a lot worse than it was in 2015.

At this point, it’s not clear if insurance will cover any of the repair work.
